I have donated leftovers (usually in large freezer bags) to homeless
shelters for years. Although the shelters work under specific rules that
try to emulate the restaurant rules and are forced to -tell- people that
they can only accept unused, in-the-box, hygenically sealed foodstuffs, I
have -never- had anything that I brought to the back door turned away.
I've brought a dozen half eaten roasted chickens (the man fairly glowed
when he took them in and mentioned their soup pot), I've taken the
leftover table fruit (usually oranges and apples), I've taken pots of stew
or soup and had the pot go in the back door and appear back to me empty
two minutes later, I've taken big roasting dishes full of savory toasted
or armoured turnips and had the same result. Always, there has been
genuine gratitude, and never has anyone told me that the good was not good
enough. There is a big difference between the official rules and the
behavior of volunteers trying to feed hungry people.
