I think that the Northmen (not Vikings, that is a job description) ice-
distilled mead, as they would allow the wine to ferment, and then take the ice
out of it, achieving the same thing as brandy.  As far as I can tell, they
didn't call it anything different than mead, they just drank it stronger.
