So is Le Professeur, but I assure you le professeur peut etre une femme.
('The teacher can be a woman', fer you uni-linguals) 
The 'case' of a title can be masculine, regardless of the gender of the
person the title applies to. Ahhh, French, the language of love AND
equality....
