When the first crusaders were besieged in Antioch ,after a year (nearly) 
of besieging it themselves, they were short of food. I blieve tey ate 
dogs then. Certainly the knioghts fortunate enough to still have horses, 
or to have regained them (a number had been captured or bought) bled the 
horses and drank the blood for nourishment, so as to avoid losing their 
mounts.
