Pure gold is pretty nearly chemically inert, which is one reason why
they used to put it in tooth fillings, etc. It doesn't react easily with
other chemicals, and so can't be metabolized. It passes harmlessly
through the digestive tract.

It's sometimes used in modern Indian cookery (although silver leaf is
more common, I take it), and can be bought under the name of vark.

If you use some kind of fake gold leaf, such as is sometimes used for
furniture, then it's quite likely it either contains no actual gold, or
is gold treated with some kind of chemical, and is likely to be
poisonous.
