What might help is to consider that in period Germany was not a single state,
it was many little states. (Yes, it was Germania to the Romans, but that was
only while the Romans were there.)  Food may have taken on specific defining
characteristics for a specific region but not for Germany as a whole.  I would
say pick a region. . .Bavaria maybe.  Or even one of the free cities, like
Bremen.  It may be an easier way to narrow the search.
