Speaking of eating with your fingers (I think this has to do with Medival
cooking?) I found out about a restaurant right here in Portland Oregon
(well, I live close enough to Portland to consider it "here") that serves
authentic Moroccan cuisine in a "feast" style with genuine Moroccan
traditions. NO utensils are served with the meal - not even for the soup!
Picking up of the bowl for sipping, and eating with your fingers (couscous,
with your fingers? Apparently so!) is expected! The tables are lowered, and
you sit on pillows. Meals are $17 per person (no matter what you order)
unless you call 3 days in advance to order the "whole sheep" meal for your
party, which is $30 per person. Kind of expensive. But I am looking for a
reason to go there (my husband's graduation in March sounds like a good
reason!) because I am excited to experience this restaurant! Wouldn't it be
neat to taste some authentic cuisine from the skills of an expert? If any
of you live (or will be traveling through) Portland, and would like to go
there, the name of the restaurant is MARRAKESH and you can call (503)
248-9442 for directions and reservations.
