I think this is common of all big dogs.  Friends of my family had us over for
a large holiday meal once.  Before we got to the table, the hostess whispered
"Don't eat the roast, I'll explain later".  Very confused, we complied, there
were lots of other things to eat- but the other guests were served up slices
of roast.
After the meal and the others had left the hostess explained.  After pulling
the roast out of the oven she had left it a moment to get the big cutting
board, on returning, the roast had disappeared, but she caught the tail end of
their half great-dane, half black-lab heading out the kitchen door.  She
chased the dog down, reprimanded it, retrieved the roast, rinsed it off,
popped it back under the broiler for 20 minutes to re-brown it, and served it
up to the other guests whom she was mad at for some reason or another...
moral- never piss off the cook!
