Gold leaf is not particularly poisonous. If you eat lots of it it won't
do you much good, and if you really eat lots of it it can form toxic
salts (these are given to arthritis patients on purpose, regularly. They
were (in the late 80's, at any rate) one of the few good medicines
available.
But mostly it means that what you put down the toilet is worth a little
more than what most people do. (It is possible, and not very dificult, to
recover the gold, but you need a lot of it before it becomes worthwhile.
