I can.

There are two different issues in authenticity--"is it historically
accurate" and "does it break the mood?" From the former standpoint, black
powder garb is as bad as modern coffee. From the latter I don't think it
is.

Black powder garb is not what Cariadoc is used to at home--but neither is a
lot of period garb. It is also not what David is used to at home. So
David/Cariadoc reacts to it as "foreign" not as "modern." Coffee and tea,
on the other hand, are very common 20th century drinks as well as OOP for
almost all of us (including Cariadoc). So seeing them being served, hearing
them talked about, makes the event more strongly a modern costume party.
