Marco Pol mentions tea but did not import it. The possibly apocryphal
appearance of tea to Western civilization (e.g. European) was at the beginning
of the 17th century when a bale was imported through Macao. The importation is
accurate but the argumant is over whether it was the Dutch or the Portuguese
who did the actual importing.. . Thomas Garaway opened the first tea house in
England in 1640.
Althought the Arabs serve tea to all their guests from the highest to the
lowest in formal silence, I was unable to establish the origins of tea
drinking in Arab lands.
