un chef de cuisine is a french phrase, which says nothing about the 
gender of the person who holds that particular office. One may say 
Monsieur le chef, Madame le chef, or Mademoiselle le chef with equal 
correctness. One could use maitre, and I think there is a specific 
feminine form. But in English it is one thing to be a master, and quite 
another to be a mistress. So perhaps chef is a good word after all.
