SC - Sharpening Fine Points or Will Adamantius Tell All?

Fine with me. How do we figure out if these are the things such recipes
refer to--as opposed to being things we would call strainers that were used
for other purposes? Consider the fine distinction in modern usage between
"strainer" and "collander."
