Ras, I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with you here. This is my own
opinion, referring to what I will call myself and anyone who allows me to
write it into an event announcement only.

In a message dated 98-01-14 09:36:47 EST, you write:

<< In many peoples minds, even today, the cook is placed somewhere between the
janitor and the garbage man. That is why I use and will continue to use the
term "feastocrat". It sounds pretentious and unwieldy BUT until a term is
chosen that describes the functions of the person in charge of a feast with
the same flair and authority that other SCA terms reflect, such as autocrat,
knight's marshal, herald, Chronicler, Chancellor Minor or even, horror of
horrors, Troll, there is little choice but to use the more awkward term.>>

Whereas I see the term feastocrat as a hideous jargon word that demeans the
function into something cutesy. At least autocrat, herald, chronicler, etc
are real words. I personally have never considered a "cook" to be a lowly
job, and especially not a "head cook", who is clearly supervising other cooks
and is responsible for the outcome of the cooking being done. It may not have
"flair", but it certainly denotes an impressive responsibility. In any case,
any cook worth his salt will have authority and flair regardless of what he is
called.

<<IMHO, the folks who come up with less flattering terms most likely view
cooking as ordering pizza or popping preprocessed garbage into the
microwave.>>

I view cooking as an art form, in which some folk are more talented than
others. I personally will never refer to myself as a feastocrat, nor will my
lord. I am the head cook. I agree with you about "kitchen steward"; that
sounds to me like the person who is responsible for keeping the kitchen clean
and properly supplied rather than the person charged with feeding people well.

<< All in all, when I do a feast, I am a feastocrat and any attempt to
relegate
me to the function of Kitchen Steward will be met with vigorous resistance.
>>
It is certainly, in my opinion, your prerogative to use whichever term you
feel appropriate (within limits of the reasonable understanding of the
populace and decency, of course). I am more upset by someone arbitrarily
changing someone's word usage than by what he is changing them to.
