Okay, this goes back, WAY back, to the 1950's.

One Thanksgiving, my father's family did the usual German-American
load-the-table'til-it-groans Thanksgiving thing, and the Highlight of the
day was always my Grandpa Mitt's Carving Of The Turkey.
Grandma and my aunts and my mother bustled back and forth from the kitchen,
bringing in more and more Good Things To Eat. They had brought in almost
everything except the Turkey, which they were letting rest a bit on the
kitchen counter, while they arranged everything so it looked nice. Grandpa
Mitt came in, sat down, and did his usual knife honing thing, and told
Grandma to go get the Turkey. She came back in and said, "It's gone!" We
all went out to look, and sure enough, the plate was there, but the Turkey
was gone. My Uncle Johnny looked out the back door, and saw the spotted
hindquarters of the family Dalmation vanishing in the distance, with a
large turkey-looking mass in her jaws. Damnation dog didn't show up for
three days, and that is why, in our family, that Thanksgiving is referred
to as "The Day Of The Damnation Turkey", and to this day, our family refers
to that breed of dog as "Damnations".
