In Australia eggs are sold by size - 55's, 49's, 61's, 67's etc (minimum
wieght, in grams, of each egg)

I get eggs from friends quite often - bantam, hen and duck eggs. The size
and colour seem to be pretty variable, so I guess that the situation is
pretty much the same as it ever was. Except that free-range eggs are more
likely to be what happened, as (as I understand it) farming was a pretty
free-range activity in the average household. (Not entirely though. Norse
greenland, in the 11th-15th centuries had agriculture based on sheep and
cattle grazing. The cattle were kept in barns through the winter and
hand-fed.)
