I doubt I can add much to this specific argument, but I remember some
interesting arguments in an archeological article on ancient brewing.
Apparently their is an ongoing argument about whether man invented
beer first or bread.

Beer can be made from bread. And bread can be made from beer.

On the plus side for beer being invented first
are the arguments that it was more nutritous. The yeasts help break
down some of the complex sugars which otherwise would be more difficult
for the human body to digest.

The beer would be less subject to spoilage.

Cooking(?) beer would be easier than baking bread. We're talking about
simple beers here.

This article was also about ancient beers and civilizations
(Summaria or Babylon?), not the European Middle Ages.

There were more arguments set forth in support of the beer first idea, but
I can't remember all of them now.

I seem to remember this article being posted to some newsgroups and if anyone
is interested, I'll look for it. Since the article was copyrighted, it is not
in my files.
