I doubt if the word "coffin" has the connotation you think.  A "coffin" is a
box like container.  It has only recently come to almost exclusively mean a
holder of dead remains.  A bread trencher is close to a "coffin," so I do not
think it would be a stretch to picture bread "coffins" as serving dishes,
perhaps.
