This is an excerpt from the New York Times on the difficulties scientists have
with determining cause and effect in various medical controversies. Here
they're discussing breast implants specifically, but the general principles
involved apply to ALL medical problems. Please understand, we know a lot, but
we don't know everything about how the human body works, we just do the best
we can.

	>Courts must look at the case before them. They have to make decisions on
the facts available, not wait until the last research study is completed. When
other processes fail, courts are the victim's last recourse. Scientists
dismiss single cases as mere "anecdotes," meaningless by themselves for
establishing cause and effect. They refuse to give verdicts when they regard
the evidence as insufficient. They consider it a duty to distinguish between
what is known and what is not known, and to refuse to decide if the necessary
facts are not available. A clash of cultures is one thing. A clash of
conclusions is something else.<
