Because you could eat the fetus and not the mommy. Certainly the hunting dogs
could have been taken care of by feeding them the carcasses since Lenten
dietary restrictions were not extended to animal life SFAIK. If not, the
carcass could have been salted and laid down for later use. 

Mind you, all of this is conjecture, of course. :-)
