Katja asks about a cookbook:
Whilst wandering through my city's renovated library (yum), I found
Dining with William Shakespeare. I'd heard of this book at some point,
so I thumbed through it. It appears to be modern redactions of Hugh
Plat, Gervase Markham, and similar period sources.

Anyway, my question to you learned gentles is this: does anyone know
if the book's accompanying text regarding Elizabethan-era cooking and
     eating practices is accurate?

     Thanks muchly, Katja

The following is excerpted from this file in the FOOD section of my
Florilegium files:

cookbooks-bib (32K) 4/21/97 Cookbook bibliography by Jaelle of Armida.

This also highlights that you should check more than one of my cookbook
review files when looking for info on a specific cookbook, as this file
appears to be the only one to mention this cookbook out of the four files I
checked.

Lorwin, Madge. DINING WITH WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE.
Atheneum. 1976. A lot of good, general information on Elizabethan era
food, as well as a number of useful pictures. Original recipes and modern
redactions. Its only flaw in my eyes is that is groups the recipes by
menus instead of by category, so that if you are looking, for instance, for
all the vegetable recipes, if have to keep going back to the index. That
is, however, a small price to pay for this informative book.
RECOMMENDED.
