Gee. I have 30 years experience as a cook (22 of those in a medieval
context), 6 years of college historical training with national honors
recognition, and I've spent the last 22, going on 23, years researching and
writing about the Middle Ages as a member of this somewhat-less-than-august
organization. I've VOLUNTEERED to judge Art/Sci on several occasions. But,
I'm not a Laurel, nor am I apprenticed, therefore, at least in this kingdom, I
am not acceptable as a judge. I've been turned away just once too often, so I
don't bother anymore. I cook the occasional feast, and enjoy myself utterly
when I do it, and I leave the A & S idiocy to those who seem to need the
validation. I teach classes about medieval food and the ways in which it was
obtained whenever I can get past the prejudice against non-peer teachers. And
I keep trying to educate the masses how to research, what a bias is and how to
recognize it, and how to find out all of the information available about their
particular interests. It's been a long, hard road, and I have recently begun
to feel that it is a useless ambition. Lately, I get the distinct impression
that very few folks in these Current Middle Ages are truly interested in
history at all.

Sorry. Just rambling. But the lack of quality, objective judging of Art/Sci
is one of my pet peeves, and has been for a number of years now. But at least
I know why there are very few professional historians in the SCA. It was
something I wondered about for a long time.

Walk in peace,
Wolfmother
