Tryca, I like your style. Point me where you want
me to go and let me
choose how best to get there within the given
parameters. I think you
would be a delight to work with.

Thanks (blush). I got good advice at the first event I ever attended,
which I also happened to be running. (I know, not a usual
happenstance). I found out about the Society from a flier mailed to
me by my best friend, who had moved from Utah to California. He
happened to be in a park one afternoon . . . the rest of that story is
familiar. I got the flier, and the phone number that he had found for
me as a contact number. The little town I was living in didn't have
an organized group, so I met the contact person, we got to be friends
quickly, and we planned an event. She was the drama teacher at the
high school, and so because of her performance schedule, didn't have
time to put things together, but she was a wishing well of good advice.
And the most important thing she told me about running an event is not
to over-schedule, because lots of things ran late, you always needed
room to change direction if the crowd seemed to need it, and most
especially, SCA people tended to be able to entertain themselves for
long periods of time, no matter what the autocrat had in mind. And
you know, it is very true. They come with food, games, handwork,
fighting equipment, and all an autocrat really needs to do is provide
space, a few props, and a framework to hang the whole thing on.
Maybe our various areas would benefit from some sort of
"Autocratting 101" class in the various colleges and so forth. I
think I benefited from my quickie. Hmmm, interesting thought. Could
be taught by a successful autocrat in conjunction with a cook to get
that perspective . . . hmmm
