1 dead as tornadoes, storms lash Pittsburgh area

Tornadoes and heavy rain lashed the Pittsburgh area Tuesday night, killing
at least one person and leaving some 50,000 people without power, officials
said Wednesday. The National Weather Service said a total of 14 twisters,
triggered by a storm system stretching from upstate New York to North
Carolina, struck southwestern Pennsylvania after 6 p.m. EDT. One man died in
Somerset County near Pittsburgh after a tree fell on him, said Jim
Messinger, an official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency team in
Harrisburg, Pa. He said more people may have been killed but confirmation
was not likely to be available until Wednesday morning. One of the
hardest-hit areas was the Mount Washington neighborhood of Pittsburgh where
a tornado stripped homes of siding and peeled off roofs. See full story

Lewinsky gets new lawyers; Starr wants quick ruling

Monica Lewinsky fired lawyer William Ginsburg Tuesday and hired two seasoned
criminal attorneys, as Kenneth Starr pushed for speedy Supreme Court rulings
on testimony in the White House sex-and-perjury case. Ginsburg, a
California-based medical malpractice specialist who has been a media fixture
since the scandal broke in January, was replaced by Washingtonians Plato
Cacheris and Jacob Stein. Ginsburg's ouster had been anticipated following a
scathing attack he made last week on independent counsel Starr in an open
letter published in California Lawyer, in which Ginsburg called on President
Clinton to dismiss Starr. See full story *** Ginsburg panned as he leaves

U.S. missed Indian 'mindset,' CIA inquest finds

U.S. spies and foreign policymakers failed to predict India's nuclear tests
largely because of a narrow "everyone-thinks-like-us" mindset, the head of a
CIA inquest said Tuesday. "Both the intelligence and policy communities had
an underlying mindset" that the hardline BJP party that rose to power in the
country in March "would behave as we behave," said Retired Adm. David
Jeremiah said. In other words, they misread the BJP as U.S.-style
politicians unlikely to follow through on campaign promises when confronted
with all the costs, he told a rare news conference at CIA headquarters. As a
result, the U.S. intelligence community focused too few spy satellites and
other resources on monitoring the problem. See full story

Congress begins probe of China ties to White House

Senate Republicans kicked off a broad probe Tuesday of Beijing's political
connections to the White House with requests for detailed information on the
possible transfer of sensitive rocket technology to China. As President
Clinton prepared for his visit to China at the end of the month, lawmakers
jumped at the chance to bring up punitive measures including limits on trade
and sanctions in response to reported religious persecution and human rights
abuses in China. They asked for White House documents and for information
from the departments of State, Defense and Commerce and the Arms Control and
Disarmament Agency. See full story

Venetian Meat recalls dry sausage from U.S. sale

A Canadian maker of dry sausage was voluntarily recalling its products from
U.S. distribution because they might be contaminated with a disease-causing
bacteria, food safety officials said Tuesday. The sausage, made by Venetian
Meat and Salami Company of Hamilton, Ontario, was distributed in the Chicago
and New York City areas, New Jersey and northern Pennsylvania. The U.S. Food
Safety and Inspection Service said it was checking import records to
determine the poundage involved. The FSIS said the meats might be
contaminated with the E coli O157:H7 bacteria and might be linked to an
outbreak in Canada of food-borne illness. Venetian recalled all dry
fermented meat products under the Venetian Brand name with codes 300 to 363
and 004 to 047 and Canadian Establishment Number 222 on the labels
