When I last made sour dough starter, after a while it just sort of "lay" there
too, but it worked fine.  does your starter smell yeasty?  If so, it should be
fine.  I'm trying to think of what could kill it & can only think that too hot
water could. (and you didn't do that, did you?  :-0 )  Did you use a clean
spoon each time to stir the starter?  If there was impurities on the spoon it
"could" have killed the starter, but as I say, if it smells yeasty, it should
be fine.
