No, you are not, because there are times when it is unavoidable.  As a Grad
student grading papers I always tried to make positive comments along with
points that could be improved.  There were times that the work was so poor
that it was a stretch to come up with something positive.  Occassionaly I had
to ask my husband to read a paper to come up with a positive comment, because
I couldn't. What there has to be is a balance between keeping standards and
providing a way for the person to improve.  Sometimes the best you can do is
offer new sources and help for the next project.
