I've
heard that you can use heat to
force the cones open, but I'm not sure exactly
how you would do that.

My grandmother grew up in the mountains of Arizona, and she told me
that every fall, they would go on a pinon expedition. They would load
up the wagon (yes, there were not cars in that part of the country
until the 1920's) and go out and camp for about a week. I don't
remember it all clearly, but I do remember them shoveling pine cones
into a pile, and having a bon-fire, which not only releases the nuts
from the cones, but roasts them in the process. They would stay out
roasting pinons for a week or so, and if the season had not been too
dry, they would take that opportunity to go berry picking at the same
time. (Chokecherries, wild currants, some blackberries.
