We generally bring lots of nibbles to any event we attend, and hand them
out to all and sundry, thus spreading the fact that there is lots of
tasty period food.

Good advice, which I also have followed. Usually I bring a very period
lunch and enough extra food to supplement the feast if it turns out
particularly meager or non-period (something which does, alas,
occasionally happen). Once I attended a weekend camping event where the
feast was loudly proclaimed to be done by an "award winning cook." The
main course turned out to be processed turkey roll served with sliced
dill pickle chips. As an extra, everyone got 1/2 of a stuffed baked
potato... I went very hungry, while the off-boarders sitting next to me
dined on their own roast suckling pig with all the accouterments! I wish
I had been that prepared! The next morning, I saw the "award winning
cook" throw out about half of the food he prepared, while at the same
time not allowing anyone to eat leftovers for breakfast (which the group
hosting the event did not provide). My friends and I left the event
early, went to a diner, and finally had our first good meal that
weekend.

I've really been enjoying the threads "Guilty Conscience" & "Horror
Stories" - all of you have my sympathies, even though its nice to know
I'm not the only one with a tale to share!
