Well, I haven't yet cooked a feast, but I have entered many A&S
competitions, both in the cooking category and other categories as well.
Here's my take on it:

1. I can make things for the comp that would be too time-consuming or
expensive to produce en masse for a feast.

2. I get specific feedback from (hopefully well-qualified) judges. This can
be much more valuable than the "Well, there were no leftovers, so it must
have been good" feedback from a feast. I mean, I could serve hamburgers and
get rave reviews from the populace, but I wouldn't really learn anything
from the experience.

3. I can "specialize" to some extent. Right now, I'm on a candy-making
kick. It's kinda hard to turn that into a complete feast.

I'm not saying that A&S competitions don't have their down sides. They do.
Here in Meridies, the judges don't get to talk to the entrants until after
the scores have been set down. Often, the comments I get on the judges
sheets are frustrating, confusing, or just plain wrong. But I always find
something I can learn from.
