I really don't know what to tell you here but I am in the same delema. After
11 years and hundreds of hours of service and excellence in my field, I can
only say that it is ,my opinion that peereages are basically guiven by whim of
the Crown. Granted that at least in the East Peers are polled as to the
suitability of candidates, ultimately there opinion is in reality meaningless
and the Crown makes the final choise.

As a "client" (e.g. who knows...asked for apprenticeship...recieved
clientship...) of a currtent peer and the starting point for several who have
attained peerage, I can understand your concern and frustration over this
question. 12 years in the SCA and an attainment of excellence in my art has
not brought me the peerage.

The reality is that over the years peers have not maintained the standards
that the society began with but ludicrously and wrongfully, IMO, now demand
that members allowed to advance to their status surpass the work they
themselves have achieved rather than equaling it. What this means is that,
basically, peers who became peers with an associate's degree are now blocking
people from their ranks that do have the equivalent of a doctorate. The peers
oftentimes also take personality into account whish is beyound ludicrous and
borders on the edge of the absurd. Unfortunately, the Crown which has the
ability and power to ignore and reverse this trend has , for whatever reasons,
chosen to not do so.

The truth of the matter is that you must not only be an expert at what you do
(e.g. cookery) but you must neow also publish, serve, tech, have a political
presence, and who knows what all to achieve peerage. This seems to be true for
all the peerage and not just for a single one. As an officer of my shire for8
years, I did not recieve any sort of service award, Granted that servise
should not be dependant on the poosibility of reward, technically, I find it
hard to imagine that anyone giving such continuous and lengthy service would
not have recieved such a rewqrd. Also, you must keep in minbd that those that
say rewards and peerages are not necessary are without fail always those who
already have those awards or peerages.

The bottom line is that the system in this area seems to have failed and it is
up to members to rasie their voices, or simply quit paying dues if your voice
is ignored in this matter, until this major injustice is corrected by the BOD.
