SC - spices vs. herbs?

Hi all from AM
Caroline suggests the following as a non-plant material "spice":

I know I've seen recipes for ground up pearls in the Elizabethan stuff, and
the use of gold leaf, of course.
Still wracking my brain...I know there's more out there! What's
frankincense and myrrh? One of 'em is sap from a bush. but the other?
