Yummmmmmmm!  They are also used extensively in salads.  On the cooking side,
Creamed Onions and several other dishes come immediately to mind when looking
uses as a vegetable.  I don't particular perceive an onion as any less
mainstream as any other vegetable.  IMHO, it is a mistake to assume raw onions
were eaten in the MA with anymore regularity than they are eat like that
today.  Especially when such conjecture is based on a single passage.
