With apologies to all, AOHell appears to have eaten the promised
long-form timeline and additional commentary. I'll try again
tonight. Until then, a quick response for Anne:

 Anne,
"Sweetmeat" (I mispelt, or transcribed a mis-spelling) I've always
associated with an item to be eaten, as in candy. This usage goes
back at least to Roman times (vendors in the stands selling, or
dispensing sponsor-provided, victuals at the Coliseum).

That, and I'll note that at least one brand of the modern version of
the solid cakes / tablets is imminently edible in my opinion (even
though I shouldn't, these days):
"Abuelita" brand, comes in bar form, is compounded from chocolate,
sugar, cocoa butter, cinnamon flavor, and modern etc. Very granular
sugar, thoroughly edible as-is (and I don't usually like cinnamon
other than in pastry rolls).

(The first bar I found and purchased was eaten more than transformed
into a drink; the second bar is still in my cupboard, hoarded for
visitors and/or as an ingredient, after I was diagnosed diabetic.)
