They are not but it can be problem at potlucks.  There are people who
don't pay as much attention to periodicity (they only bring something
because they have to).  Newbies often don't know, and then you get into
the whole "but Columbus found the New World in 1492 and we play up to 
1600 (or 1650 depending on who you or they have been talking to) so x is
period" syndrom.

We also have a lady in our area who is not only allergic to bell peppers,
but to black pepper as well.
