Oxford English Dictionary. It is the standard scholar's dictionary, and is
available as:

Enough large volumes to fill a substantial fraction of a bookshelf

Two large volumes of tiny print plus a magnifying glass

A CDROM

I have the magnifying glass version, which can quite often be found in used
bookstores at a reasonable price. It is a very useful reference, since it
documents, for each word, its earliest known use.
