cook, it's nigh impossible to get his recipes, since they're wildly different
every time... guess I'm going to have to go home and visit for a week or two,
and start following him around with a videocamera...

sounds like the stack of recipe cards my mother inherited from her mother. 
The recipes read "take enough flour and mix with butter and sugar until it
feels right- shape, bake until done"  and the like!  Just enough information
to jog the memory of the cook who wrote it down, and just little enough to
frustrate the rest of us all to heck! ;)
