Subject: [Mid] Contact Information Needed for MK Great Booke Artisans
Message-ID: <s642af8b.015 at ucs5.cc.wmich.edu>

Good morning!

I am working on a project which will bring the Great Booke of Ceremonies
of the Middle Kingdom into the virtual millenium. I am building a web
page for the Great Booke, and I need to contact all the artisans who had
anything to do with the Great Booke's production, to get their permission
to use their work.

This is a list of the people who worked on the Booke for whom I need
current contact information. There are two pieces of work which are
currently unidentified, and a description of the works appears after the
list of individuals. My thanks to Baron Master Sir Ranthulfr Asparlundr
for his work on creating the index of artists.

Any information you have on the whereabouts of the artisans will be
appreciated. I need a point of contact (address, phone number, email
addy), the more complete, the better. Anyone who might be able to
identify the unkown scribes by the description of the pages would be much
appreciated. I can be emailed at: judith.a.kirk at wmich.edu (most
reliable), dbsamber at iserv.net, darkblade at compuserve.com, or
siobhan75 at hotmail.com

Please feel free to cross-post this Society-wide, for those who have such
access to different lists.

I thank you all for your assistance in advance. I will keep you notified
of progress toward the goal!

The list of artisans for whom I need contact info:

Master Robert of Two Cliffs
Lord Daniel of Tweed
Mistress Kathleen Allen (An Tir?)
Mistress Liusaidh Mac Leiod (Middle?)
Lord Pharamond of Flanders
Lady Caitrin of Chalcewell
Lord Dolan Arcanus (Calontir?)
Countess Mistress Elen O' Dwynever (West?)
Lord Tofi Kerthialfadrron (spelling?)
Graf Syr Shadan (Calontir?)

Unidentified artisans/work:

Creation of a Lady of the Rose: there is a small "E" in a corner of the
page. I assume it to be a maker's mark, but there is no other signature.
This illumination has exquisite miniatures which are close portraits of
actual former Ladies of the Rose, including Countess Fern, Duchess
Caellyn, Countess Elen, Duchess Myfanwy, Duchess Ithriliel, and two I
cannot readily identify. There is lovely whitework and diapering,
acanthus leafwork and brambles ("rosebushes"). The calligraphy is a
gothic textura quadrata style hand.

Listing of the Order of the Laurel:

There appears to be a maker's mark in one of the four miniatures at each
corner of the larger illuminated block. The letters are "AED", although
the "E" looks to be reversed, as in the number "3". The four
rondel/miniatures imitate the placement of the four apostles, but these
contain a male harpist, a winged rabbit, a winged lion, and a female
scribe (where the makers' mark/initials appear).

The large capital "L" has a dragon entwined, and a laurel wreath worked
in as well. It appears to have been done with tempera paints with
whitework diapering. The listing of the laurels of the Middle Kingdom is
done with simple Lombardic-style or early-gothic capitals in red and
green, and the calligraphy appears to be an early gothic style as well
(based on what I could best find in Drogin as a comparison).
