The Kingdom of Jerusalem, which was very much a European kingdom, existed in
the Middle East for about 200 years. Sicily was an Arabic kingdom for an
extended period, as was Cyprus. While Islamic influence in Spain was
largely North African, the surviving branch of the Ommyiad (check that
spelling for me, please) Caliphate of Damascus were leaders in Andalusia.

Middle Eastern and European cultures were engaged in direct confrontation
for around a thousand years and the Europeans were interested in Islamic
knowledge and culture, which helped trigger the Renaissance. The
interaction with Islamic culture from 700 to 1700 is a big piece of European
history.
