Ok, so who else used their family/friends/household as guinea pigs
yesterday? I did 4 recipies I had gotten off of this list, with varying
success.
I made Tartys in Apfels, which was good, and not very sweet. I
basically comes out as an apple custard, sweetened only with the apples
and raisins. Apples, raisins, eggs, cream, and spices blended and baked
in a shell. I liked it, but felt the need to add cool whip to the top.
I made the Apple Mouse, which I liked very much. The other cooks
in the household said it would be good in small tart shells, I think it
would make a good in-between courses small desert. One lady said she
felt like she should wear it instead of eat it, because of the rosewater.
Apples, stewed and pureed, returned to saucepan. 3 egg yolks beaten
with rosewater and 2T. of sugar, cooked slowly to a boil. Sprinkled with
cinnamon and ginger to finish.
I made stuffed eggs, made from a combination of several period
recipies posted here. They had combined with the egg yolks: grated white
cheese, cilantro, coriander, dill, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar (the
good stuff, 25 years old in a 4 oz. bottle). They were quite good, and
most folks liked them.
I also made a recipie somebody posted called "Old Recipie for
Butterscotch". It called for brown sugar and butter, oil of lemon
extract and ginger. It did not come out resembling anything like
butterscotch, but more like burnt toffee. (I swear I stirred it
constantly and it DIDN'T burn!) Not bad, but not what I had expected.
There was a very good cranberry upside down cake and roasted
vegetables from Martha Stewart's Living; 2 turkeys with different
dressings; apple, pumpkin, chocolate silk, and bourbon pecan pies; 2
different vegetable salads; turnovers made with 3 different kinds of
cheeses, lamb, salmon, beef, tuna, and Syrian meat cigars (wrapped in
phyllo); toasted pine nuts and pumpkin seeds; creamed potatoes; various
fresh bread and rolls; croquet, card games, videos, legos, conversation,
and fun. My household is full of feastcrats, doers, and friends, and I
was thankful for them all. I told them we had the most unusual leftovers
in the city. :)

Here's hoping your holiday was as special as mine, and that your
leftovers are as interesting.
