Stefan,

	According to a 12th c. Latin bestiary (trans. and presented in
_The Book of Beasts_ by T.H. White, Dover, 1984), the Basilisk is a type
of serpent, though I admit it looks more like a chicken crossed with a
slug. It can kill merely by it's smell, and if it looks at a man , it can
destroy him. Apparently it is bad for birds, too. But they can be killed
by weasels, so if this is a concern you might think about keeping a couple
in your yard...
	I have several bestiaries on my shelves, if you're dying for more
info.
