Your screen probably doesn't display more than 75-100 dpi, so if 
the original was 5 inches wide and scanned at 300 dpi, the scanned 
version will display as 15-20 inches wide - the dots are physically 
bigger. (For the size of printouts on paper, things are rather more 
complex.)
