<< We go to great lengths to prove the learning and scholarship of the
scribes who hand copied books for most of period. And yet, without thinking,
we make emotional judgments about their food without even examining the facts.
On this list, my own horizons have been vastly expanded to see a greater and
very diverse Medevial world. They really were like us, and enjoyed eating the
same way we do. >>

I think there are two problems we face. The first is that there isn't much
recourse if you eat a bad feast, other than suffering through it and
remembering who the cook was. If you get a poorly done scroll, for instance,
you can go to you Kingdom scribe to be put on the back scrolls list or you can
ask a scribe you know to do a new one. All of our other arts are the same
way, you can either get it fixed or get it re-done. Badly cooked food can not
be redone.

The second problem is that people have been exposed to too many badly cooked
period feasts. I think many people are like me in that they are willing to
give a second or even third chance. Its after the fourth or fifth bad
experience I get a little wary. People have been turned off by badly cooked
period food, and rather than considering that it was an inexperienced or poor
cook, they put it down to period food being inedible.

Its created an uphill battle for those that do period cooking well. (I don't
include myself in that because I don't do period cooking, I'm too busy doing
period scrolls and figuring out how to do period leatherwork. :->) This list
is one tool towards promoting the idea that period food was good food, it just
needs to be prepared right. The wonderful feasts that the many members of
this list prepare that are period are the best tool, because they PROVE that
period food is good.
