I think hunter/gatherer is a *bit* off. Most people lived on small
farms, with both cattle of various kinds and crops. Definitely trade,
but last I heard no one thought they could do anything but glass-beads
and such themselves, and had to import any other glassware. The
archaeological records support this view, at least to my knowledge.
