Stefan,

>>It may be splitting hairs, but serving special dishes or the same
dishes with special, more expensive ingredients to the the high table
might also be considered to be a similar misuse of event or group
money.<<

Special dishes for High Table are very period. Granted, they didn't pay
for their meals as we do. The Ruling Noble should send bits of special
goodies to some favored ones: the fellow who was most courteous on the
field, the helpful ones, etc. That practice hasn't picked up, and should
be encouraged. One possibility is for Kitchen Stewards to make something
to show off to the King and Queen using costs from their own pocket.
Another possibility is for the costs--because it is a period custom--to
come from the 'fudge factor' if no catastrophe has occurred to use it.

Remember that Ruling Nobles have a lot more responsibility and work than
most of us--and lots more costs from their own pockets. It's not an evil
or undesired thing, IMO, to reward them a bit. Especially, if it all
adds to the ambiance WE are enjoying.
