We went to see the Jorvik Viking Center in York while we were there. We
met a Norse re-enactor (we met a lot of renenactors there, it was kindof
neat to have something in common with so many!) who was doing coin stamps
as a touristy thing in the gift shop. After talking for some time, he
told us about a drink that would be closer to the average Viking's daily
drink than mead. It is an ale flavored with honey, called
"Waggledance". (Named for the dance that bees do to alert others from
their hive to pollen sources.) It was not sweet, but definately honey
flavored. A light beer/ale, not too hoppy, nothing like mead. It was
good, and the pub that served it (The Blue Bell) was charming, if tiny.
We got into a conversation with one of the patrons there, who just
happened to be a brewer, and had a very nice time talking with him. We
had to laugh when he said he had been entering contests with his beers,
but that the judges around there only liked stouts and bitters, and
trying to educate the judges was so hard, etc! I said that I understood
completely, that we had some experience with entering competitions, and
that no judge was completely objective.
