In a message dated 98-10-10 01:06:28 EDT, you write:

<< ACK!!!!! can you imagine? a horde of "chief cooks" asking for the use of a
burner/stove/pan/whatever while you're trying to get a three course meal
 for 200 out the door??!!!!!

boggles the mind. I am just too Type A for this level of authenticity, I
 guess! >>

Not at all... if it was a "great lords" personal cook, he would outrank you in
your kitchen just as the "great lord" would outrank the master of the house.
The comparison would be if the King had his own cook, or Duke So-and So who
was visiting from another barony or kingdom were to attend your banquet, they
could expect thier cook to provide their meals as usual, if that was their
preference. Not every Tom, Dick or Harry who just wanted something special.
It wouldn't work now for the same reason it wouldn't work then. Too many
"cooks" in the kitchen. If 25% of your feast attendees (as an arbitrary
number) could have access to your kitchen, what a nightmare! Availability
would create a furthur demand, too. AARGH!
