I am not convinced that it would not have been done in period. 
Certainly within the scope of my persona I can envisage it. 
Elizabethans were into Masques with exotic costumes and foods.  These
could be the 16th century interpretation of what middle-easterners were
wearing, or roman centurians... or dressing up as greek gods.

It certainly does not seem a far leap to having a tour of countries, or
a tour of the ages as a feast theme for the 16th century feaster.
