This is not a joke, Pa, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Kentucky are all
called Commonwealths. This goes back to Article of Confederation days
when all the states were really seperate countries in a Confederacy of
one federal government. The Term is only ceremonial now and bestows no
benefits. Puerto Rico is an American Commonwealth that is for most
purposes it's own country.
