You buy or borrow a CDR drive--a drive that can write CD disks. Currently a
4X (that's a measure of the recording speed) external CDR for a Macintosh
costs about $400; there are probably cheaper ones for Windows machines. It
should come with a computer program called "Toast" (at least on Macs--I
don't know if it is the best software for Windows machines as well).

You buy CDR disks; the high end ones cost about $3 each. One disk holds
about 640 megs, so your 400 disks will take either one or two CD's,
depending on what kind of floppies they are. The drive can write an entire
CD in something between ten minutes and an hour. Transfer your files from
floppies to your hard drive, then from the hard drive to a CD. You now not
only have a backup, you have a backup that can be read in an ordinary CD
drive, which most recent computers have.

If you have a Mac, and happen to be in San Jose, bring over your disks and
we can take care of the matter in an afternoon.

David (who just backed up a hard drive to CDR last night)/Cariadoc (who
doesn't know what any of this is about)
