SC - A Few questions

William asked some questions that mostly seemed to center around England
between 1066 and 1135.

I'm afraid I can't help you directly with too many of your questions but
perhaps I can offer some places to look.

England still had a lot of Anglo-Saxon influeance then, at least in the
southern portion, so perhaps some of the Anglo-Saxon books on food would
be worth looking at. You can find more info on some of these books in
this file in the FOOD section of my Stefan's Florilegium:

books-food-msg (29K) 5/12/98 Books about food. Not cookbooks.

>2) I there was a receipe on this list a few days ago for an apple and spice
>loaf. Being historically ignorant when it comes to food, is there any
>chance that something like this could have been done in England between 1066
>& 1135?

I think the real question would be the sweetener and how much was used. I
think sugar would be extremely unlikely in this time and place. Honey might
have been used. I'm not sure of the rest of this recipe. You might check
these files in the FOOD and the FOOD-SWEETS sections of my files:

fruits-msg (174K) 8/31/98 Medieval fruits and fruit dishes. Recipes.
fruit-apples-msg (30K) 8/28/98 Period apples and apple recipes.
sugar-msg (86K) 7/31/98 Sugar and other medieval sweeteners.
desserts-msg (72K) 9/ 3/98 Medieval and SCA dessert recipes. Sweets.

> I have for some easy meaty
>receipes (documentable), but we have some vegetarians(?sp) in our group.

Try this file:
vegetarian-msg (45K) 8/26/98 Medieval vegetarianism. Lenten foods.

> (ii) I
>need to if a quichey type dish my wife makes ( it's a mixture of egg, cheese
>and ham and some herbs) is likely to have been used in this period and place

You might try this file:
eggs-msg (95K) 8/21/98 Egg storage. Recipes. Substitutions.

> (v) is there a "coffee" like drink
>that would have been used during this period. (ie. not minted water.)

Definitely not coffee during this period. Even for the Middle East. See
this file in my BEVERAGES section for more details:
coffee-msg (69K) 6/12/98 Coffee and coffee-type drinks.

You might take a look at some of the other files in this section while
you are there, but I don't think there are any beverages that will fit
your requirements.

My Florilegium files can be found at:

Good luck.
